Not Everyone thinks Ubisoft’s New Studio is a Good Thing July 12, 2009

Did anyone hear about Ubisoft starting up a new studio in Toronto, Canada? Unfortunely, not everyone thinks that Ubisoft bringing 800 new jobs to Toronto is a good thing.
According to Marcus Gee from Toronto’s Globe and Mail, he thinks that the Canadian government is wasting money on “attracting” gaming companies over to Canada.
That quarter-billion has to come from somewhere, much of it from good Toronto businesses that don’t have the buzz factor to attract an open-collared premier. Their tax burden will rise, and their business will suffer, while the cool kids in the video-game industry collect government cheques.
But nobody’s getting any government cheques here. Ubisoft’s getting $263 million in non-refundable tax credits over ten years, so they’re not receiving any money, they’re just paying less.

It would be wonderful if Ubosift was going to have a studio in Toronto ON, however there would be tons of jobs needed to be filled, and I’m not sure how well people would succeed.
