As many Canadians using mobile phones are aware, the wireless carrier situation in our country isn’t a very pretty one.
Even compared to our neighbours down south, our measly list of carriers should serve as an indication that something might be wrong. Despite the seemingly extensive selection upon first glance, many are notably subdivisions of the Big 3 — namely, Rogers, Bell, and Telus. There are also a number of smaller carriers that provide service to certain regions but piggy-back off the networks of the Big 3.
In other words, most of the Canadian wireless service is propped up by this three-pronged oligopoly. Therein lies the problem.

Swype is a new type of touch-based keyboard. So for those of you who have iPhone and are tired of typing on a touch screen, try this! Instead of actually tapping the screen, all you have to do with Swype is just swipe. This new kind of keyboard will make its debut on the Samsung Omnia II via Verizon. Now the actual speed increase in typing might not be a lot, but then again, it the video Swype needed only 1 finger versus the iPhone which needed 2.

For those of you who don’t remember what OnLive is let me give you simple run down. OnLive is company that wants to build you a SINGLE console, that will let you play ANY GAME available on any system on the market. How it works is that they plan to stream everything at high speed and high definition. This sounds a little skeptic to most people, but recently OnLive showed a demo of someone playing a game on their iPhone App with someone playing on the PC. So imagine if you would a couple of years from now, when you can play your xBox Live games while commuting to work. You could be playing the next Modern Warfare on an App on your phone. Hopefully they do make it available for other phones that have actually keyboards and buttons to press.

Oh my word… Nokia our favourite Finnish phone maker has just announced their newest flagship phone in the N-Series… The wait is over the N97 is here and it is simply stunning. It has a 3.5″ touchscreen and is running on the Symbian S60 platform and from the looks of it, runs pretty smooth as well. What makes this phone so special? Well it is taking cellphones on from another angle and emphasizing its role as a social networking device. This new model will also incorporate a full qwerty slide away keyboard and will have all the bells and whistles as with most Nokia phones. Full specs and press release after the jump. (more…)
